| WaterAid is a leading independent organisation which enables the world's poorest people to gain safe access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. WaterAid work in Africa, Asia and the Pacific region and campaigns globally with its partners to realise their vision of a world where everyone has access to these basic human rights.
In 2003, the MCFEA supported WaterAid on a project in Niassa province in Mozambique . This project provided the infrastructure needed to improve the city's water supply and public sanitation, helping make a fundamental difference to the health and quality of life of local people.
In 2004, the MCFEA also began to support another WaterAid project in Maputo , Mozambique 's capital city. Of Maputo 's population of 1.6 million, a staggering 60% need WaterAid's help in gaining adequate access to clean water and sanitation. Sanitation and drainage are pressing problems in Maputo ; large areas flood causing grave health risks - notably cholera. WaterAid's work has already attracted attention from other developing countries such as Ethiopia and Bangladesh who have sent missions to Maputo .
Building on this strong relationship, in 2008 the MCFEA is providing a donation of over £72,000 to support WaterAid’s work with three local NGO partners in Maputo - ADASBU, Estamos and Padmozi – who, with WaterAid’s help, are working to deliver sanitation and hygiene promotion activities to a combined population of over 100,000 people. This donation brings the MCFEA’s total donations to WaterAid to over £260,000 since 2003.
