The Trustees of the MCFEA gnerally meet at the beginning of the year to decide on the MCFEA’s main grant-making program for the year. The last meeting of the Trustees was in April 2008; the next meeting is expected to take place in early 2009.

Objectives of the MCFEA

The principal objectives of the Mitsubishi Fund for Europe and Africa are:

  1. To conserve and protect, for the benefit of the public, the environment as a whole and its animal, forest and plant life in particular and to educate the public in natural history and ecology and the importance of conservation of the environment;
  2. To advance the education of the public and, in particular, but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing:
    (a) to promote education and research in the field of ecology and conservation of natural resources and the environment anywhere in the world;
    (b) to promote the study and appreciation of flora and fauna anywhere in the world with particular emphasis on endangered species;
    (c) to promote the study and appreciation of agriculture, horticulture, silviculture and land and estate management;
    (d) to carry out research into the sustainable development of forest lands.
  3. To relieve poverty in any part of the world.

Grant-making Policy
  1. The Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa's (MCFEA, or "the Fund") objects or aims in making grants are broadly defined in articles 4 and 5 of the Trust deed dated 30 September 1992 as being conservation of the environment and education of the public in environmental conservation, particularly in areas and among communities which suffer from economically straitened circumstances.
  2. The area of operation of the Fund is, in that document, stated as being anywhere in the world; but the intention of the funders when the Fund was first set up was that it should be limited to Europe and Africa, as witnessed by its name.
  3. The Trustees have adopted and intend to continue following a policy of supporting at any one time one larger-scale project, absorbing up to about 50% of the Fund's annual expenditure on grants, the balance being divided among a few smaller projects. They have been prepared to commit themselves to supporting the larger projects for up to 3 to 5 years, thus giving time for research or other activities which cannot be completed in a very short timespan; smaller activities are supported for shorter or longer periods according to need and to results. Total expenditure on grants in any year is currently set at around £100,000.
  4. Other considerations are also taken into account by Trustees when deciding on projects to be supported/grants to be made;

    •  "education" is taken in a broad sense as including staff and local communities as well as the public at large;

    •  the educational work of the Fund can be enhanced if there are, in the neighbourhood of a project, staff employed by funders or their associates who can be encouraged to take an interest in or to accompany in some way the progress of the project;

    •  the validity of any project to which the Trustees are thinking of contributing funds, must be assured i.e. its scientific, academic and other credentials must be of a high order;

    •  when considering new proposals for large projects to be supported, possibly, for a number of years, views of funders are sought to try to ensue that their financial input into the Fund is not likely to cease during the project's lifetime;

    •  the MCFEA will not provide financial support for individuals, nor will it make donations for religious, political or lobbying purposes. It will not support any organization that discriminates on the basis of race, colour, creed, sex, marital status or handicap.

  5. Proposals for projects to be supported may be received;

    •  from contacts already made by the Fund or by Trustees; or

    •  from applicants who have heard of the Fund from the Mitsubishi Corporation website or other sources.

    In the latter case, an initial screening is carried out by the Secretary to weed out applications;

    •  for projects outside the Fund's geographical area of activity or its objects as given in 1 and 2 above;

    •  for projects for which funds are not available due to commitments already made (see 3 above).

    Projects are then considered by the Chairman and if deemed by him to be suitable in terms of (i) and (ii) above, are advised to other Trustees for their views after any extra clarification is received from the applicant if requested.

    The main time for consideration of projects is the 2-3 months leading up to the Annual meeting of the Trustees, usually held in January/February, when all ongoing and possible/probable future projects are reviewed.

  6. The Trustees' policies for grant-making will continue as laid down in 3, 4 and 5 above until further notice.
