Mitsubishi Corporation’s scope of business is often difficult to grasp. We are often confused with Mitsubishi Motors, or Mitsubishi Electric. These businesses are actually owned by separate, independent companies who share the “Mitsubishi” name.
So what is Mitsubishi Corporation?
Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) is Japan’s largest general trading company (sogo shosha) with over 200 bases of operations in approximately 80 countries worldwide. With over 500 group companies, MC employs a multinational workforce of approximately 54,000 people. MC has long been engaged in business with customers around the world in virtually every industry, including energy, metals, machinery, chemicals, food and general merchandise. MC seeks to contribute to the enrichment of society through business firmly rooted in principles of fairness and integrity.
Although our activities encompass everything from trading to business investment, the essence of what we do at MC can best be described as focusing on the needs and seeds of customers and society, conceiving business models, and reliably providing functions and services to propel these businesses forward.
Mitsubishi Corporation is just one of many independent companies that bear the Mitsubishi name. Founded in the early 1870s as a steamship company by Yataro Iwasaki, the original “Mitsubishi” grew into a collection of companies engaged in most sectors of the Japanese economy. After World War II, the Mitsubishi holdings were broken up into over 40 independent companies, many of which still bear the Mitsubishi name and carry on its tradition of leadership and corporate principles.
